What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown may also be called a “cap” because its purpose is to completely cover a damaged or vulnerable tooth. Crowns are intended to protect such teeth from additional harm while also renewing their function and appearance.

You might need a crown if a tooth has significant decay, is cracked or broken, has suffered extensive wear, or has a variety of other issues. In some cases, crowns are even used for purely cosmetic purposes.

Crowns can be made of a variety of materials. In our office, we want our patients to love the way they look! That is why we provide Emax, zirconia, and porcelain crowns; these materials can be shade-matched to natural teeth and look incredibly seamless and beautiful.

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

The dental crown process typically requires two appointments. During the first visit, we will numb your mouth and prepare your tooth by shaping it in a way that will allow it to fit beneath your crown. Next, we will use our digital impression scanner to capture a highly precise and detailed image of the tooth and the surrounding area.

We will send the impression to one of our partner laboratories, where a skilled technician will fabricate your crown. In the meantime, a temporary crown will protect your tooth. After your permanent restoration is ready, we will make sure it meets our expectations before we secure it in your mouth.

Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

A dental crown is a small object, but it can offer some huge benefits:

  • Preserve your tooth: A crown may prevent the need for an extraction, so you can avoid a brand-new gap in your smile.
  • Enhanced comfort: A crown can protect your tooth from pain and allow you to easily chew your favorite foods.
  • Aesthetics: Crowns blend in seamlessly with the nearby dentition, so even if you need one for a front tooth, you will have no reason to feel self-conscious about your smile.
  • Lasting function: With proper care, crowns often last for up to 10 – 15 years or longer.

You may not have to give up on damaged or weak teeth! Visit Spring Creek Dentistry to learn how a crown could preserve your smile.
