Dr. Ron Miller is a Diplomate of the International Dental Implant Association and Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, having completed hundreds of hours of specialized training placing and restoring dental implants. Due to his advanced knowledge and skills, he’s able to complete the entire dental implant procedure in-house, including the surgical placement. This allows our patients to be treated by the same experts they know and trust throughout their entire journey.
Dental implants refer to small posts that are surgically placed directly into a patient’s jawbone, to act as replacement tooth roots. Since they’re made from biocompatible materials, like titanium or zirconia, they can fuse with bone tissue in order to form a stable foundation for a custom dental restoration. This is something that other dental restorations cannot offer. Dental implants can replace any number of missing teeth, no matter where they’re located within the mouth. Better yet, placing them is straightforward and they also come with all kinds of life-changing benefits.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process
Unlike dentures and dental bridges, which have relatively short treatment timelines, the dental implant process can stretch for several months or longer. Do not let that alarm you: The end results are well worth it! Plus, because our Spring, TX, team offers start-to-finish dental implant services, you can expect us to be with you every step of the way. You will start with an initial consultation before undergoing dental implant surgery. Then, you will go through osseointegration, abutment placement, and restoration.
Initial Dental Implant Consultation
As with any type of surgery, the first step is meeting with us for a consultation. Not everyone is immediately eligible for dental implants; your jawbone density, gum health, and other factors must be considered, and some patients must undergo preliminary treatment beforehand. For example, you might need gum disease therapy, a bone graft, or tooth extractions.
This consultation can give you a realistic idea of the road ahead. Do not hesitate to ask questions or express concerns; we want you to make a well-informed decision about your treatment.
Once we are confident that your mouth is ready to support dental implants, we will start planning your surgery.
Dental Implant Surgery
We can complete the entire dental implant process here at our Spring dental office, meaning you won’t need to worry about coordinating with other teams or offices. This simplifies and streamlines your entire dental implant journey.
The surgery itself is not overly complicated. After making you comfortable with local anesthesia and/or sedation, we will carefully create incisions in your gums so we can access your jawbone. Then, we will place the implants at their pre-planned positions. Once the incisions are closed, you can go home to start the recovery process. Most patients are feeling well enough to return to work within a day or two.
After they have been placed in your jawbone, the implants will begin fusing with the bone tissue through a process called osseointegration. This can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months. That might seem like a long time, but this stage is vital for your implants’ long-term success.
Once things have healed properly, you might need to undergo a second minor surgery, wherein abutments will be placed on top of the implant posts. Abutments are small connector pieces that will help keep your new teeth in place. (Some patients receive abutments during their initial surgery, so this step is not always necessary.)
Delivery of Dental Implant Restorations
To design your new restoration (crown, bridge, or denture), our team will use digital scanning technology to capture impressions of your mouth. A laboratory will use that data to create your beautiful new teeth. When they arrive in our office, we will double-check that they meet our strict quality standards before we attach them to your implants.
Once your new teeth are secure, you may go through a brief adjustment period. However, no real downtime is required. You can start to enjoy the benefits of your new smile right away!
